The mind has the ability to learn very quickly and if you have had this issue for many years, a complete change of perspective to what triggers a compulsion and then whether a compulsive act is the best form of response, can happen very quickly as the mind learns that the older strategy (that led to the compulsive thought or behaviour) wasn’t as healthy as the new strategy that the therapist might present, leaving it open for the mind to learn new and better ways.
Habits can be broken and habitual behaviour can be changed, no-one is born with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder so it can be superseded by more successful behaviour patterns, although it can prove difficult to treat in some cases it can be done.
